The Indian pharmaceuticals market increased at a CAGR of 17.46 per cent during 2005-16 with the market increasing from US$ 6 billion in 2005 to US$ 36.7 billion in 2016 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 15.92 per cent to US$ 55 billion by 2020. For the achievement of these goals, it is necessary for the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry to become globally competitive through world class manufacturing capabilities with quality and cost efficiency of production capacity. There is a need to develop world class support infrastructure both for production and research.

Today's challenging Pharmaceutical environment wherein customers want better, cheaper, and safer drugs, only adds to the pressures on the industry and its manufacturing plants posing a major constraint on pharmaceutical operations and the design of OPEX initiatives. The industry is lagging behind the "performance curve" on operational excellence. There are best practices available from other industries that can be exploited, but this needs to be done in a way that recognizes the specific characteristics of the pharma environment. Global status of Indian pharma industry will necessitate excellence and improvement including in response to regulatory guidelines.

Launching Operational Excellence (OPEX) constitutes a true challenge for every manufacturing organization. Changing the habits and behavior of people, making them leave the beaten track and ultimately changing their mindset to continuous improvement is a real management task and demands leaders to be charismatic, encouraging and tenacious. This especially holds true for the highly regulated pharmaceutical industry and its heritage of reluctance to change. The forum shall discuss the philosophy and elements of OPEX and critically analyze how they can be replicated industry wide.
